Literacy Tip

"It's not the toys in the house that make the difference in children's lives; it's the words in their heads. The least expensive thing we can give a child outside of a hug turns out to be the most valuable: words." From Chapter One: Why read aloud? The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease

Cook with your kids!

Important literacy skills are present in cooking activities!

The best learning takes place when you do these things with your child, so here are some ways to make it happen.

Cooking

1. Cook together and chat while you do. When you cook with children, they learn how to combine ingredients, mix, stir, and taste. But they also learn language. They use nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs as they talk about what they’re doing.

2. Read a recipe together. The recipe is made of words and pictures that communicate exactly what to do. By doing each step in order, the finished product will be delicious!

3. Plan a grocery list. Collect any coupons you can find. Shop together.

4. Read! Usborne has the best kid-friendly cookbooks & recipe card sets!

5. Make your own menus.

6. Make place-card labels with everyone's name.

7. Read food labels and talk about nutrition.

8. Make at least one meal a day when you can all sit down together and talk about your day. Conversation builds vocabulary and togetherness.

Smarty Pants Camp

It is estimated that students can lose up to 30% of their skills and knowledge during the summer! Smarty Pants Camps will help keep children reading, writing and problem solving during the summer to help prevent this Summer Brain Drain.

The Space Explorers Camp includes 8 missions, so it would cover 8 weeks. The first mission is getting ready, decorating your notebook and collecting all your supplies. The last mission is wrapping up with a travel brochure to Space project where kids showcase what they have learned.

Each mission is about 3 hours of "work". Families could break up that up over a few days or have one "Science Day" a week. It is designed to follow the inquiry learning process, so there are lots of hands-on activities to help students explore each concept. We also wanted to be sure to include effective writing activities. There are also a bunch of creative activities like holding a news conference after your rocket launch and writing a song.

Each student would need his/her own notebook. The three levels have the same core experiments. A family with the different ages could do one activity together, but then a 1st grader will answer different questions than a 5th grader. The idea would be for each family to have a set of the camp books and just get together with their friends/neighbors for the fun. It could be an option for friends/neighbors to share the Usborne Books too.
